What Is a Tendency Tone?

Tendency tone or tendency note is a scale degree or chord-tone that has a strong tendency to resolve in a particular way. There are two tendency tones within the major scale. The first tendency tone is scale degree no. 7, which is called the leading tone and has a strong tendency to resolve up by half step. The second tendency tone is scale degree no. 4, which is called chordal seventh and has a strong tendency to resolve down by half step.
