Many composers use Modal Mixture or Modal Interchange (it's two names of the same phenomena) in order to achieve chromatic inflections and to enrich their melodic and harmonic language. The meaning of Modal Mixture is to mix or borrow notes from the parallel scale. In this video I'm borrowing scale degree no. 6 from the parallel minor scale. Check out the video clip for more info.

There are many hypotheses about the term Picardy Third, why is it called Picardy? Since I don’t deal with hypotheses and I prefer to deal with musical facts I can say that the name derives from the Picardy region in France.

Picardy Third or as it’s known in French (Tierce de Picardie) occurs in the minor keys. The third refers to the raised third of the tonic chord, transforming the chord to a major chord, which gives some kind of uplifting ending feeling to the music. The Picardy Third typically occurs at an authentic cadence at the end of the piece.

The meaning of Modal Mixture is to mix or borrow notes from the parallel scale. It is very common to borrow notes from the parallel major or minor scales. Nevertheless, we can also borrow notes from some other scales in order to enrich our palette of sounds. We can borrow notes from every scale as long as we borrow notes from the parallel scale, meaning that both scales share the same tonic. In this video I'm borrowing notes from the parallel phrygian mode. The phrygian mode is very beautiful and unique. It has a strong Spanish flavor as the second scale degree is half step above its tonic. Check out the video clip for more info.
